Counterfeit notes: RBI lodges complaint

The Reserve Bank of India’s Regional Office in Coimbatore has lodged complaints with the District Crime Branch on the alleged deposit of counterfeit currency notes by nationalised banks from Kanyakumari district.

A senior police official told The Hindu that Assistant General Manager Devi Sree and another official Venkatraj of RBI, Coimbatore lodged complaints of receiving counterfeit currency notes from the Central Bank of India, State Bank of India, State Bank of Travancore and Canara Bank – all Nagercoil branches recently.

In their complaint, the officials stated that the RBI had received counterfeit notes in the denomination of Rs. 500 and Rs. 100 from these banks’ branches recently.

The officials urged the District Crime Branch to probe the source of counterfeit notes.

The District Crime Branch registered cases under section 489 (B) (using as genuine forged or counterfeit currency notes) of Indian Penal Code and are investigating.
