In a bid to avoid incidents such as the death of a 16-year-old student in the hostel of a private school last Friday, a counselling session for the management representatives of private schools in the district will be held on October 1, said District Collector V. Dakshinamoorthy said, here on Tuesday.
The programme would jointly be organised by the Superintendent of Police and the Chief Education Officer at the Collectorate. The Collector said that private schools in the district were known to help students emerge State toppers in examinations. These schools attracted thousands of students from other districts and states. “A psychologist and counsellor will speak about the art of handling students,” he said.
“School education in Namakkal has earned a reputation and it should be maintained through good management practices,” he added. The Tamil Nadu Nursery, Primary, Matriculation, Higher Secondary and CBSE Schools Association led by its State general secretary K.R. Nandhakumar submitted a petition to the Collector on Tuesday demanding that arrests of correspondents of private schools or management representatives after incidents of death of students be stopped. “Holding them morally responsible when a student commits suicide in the school or hostel, or when students meet with accidents while travelling in the school’s transport vehicles is not fair,” he told The Hindu .
He claimed that the correspondents of more than 100 schools were arrested the State in the last two years.
He said that head masters of government schools were not arrested when similar incidents occurred on government schools.
The association asked the government to release the correspondent of the school in Namakkal who was arrested on Saturday.
