Ruling AIADMK Councillors, and the opposition DMK clashed at the meeting of the Attur Municipality held here on Tuesday over allotment of special funds by the government in connection with the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the local body.

Umarani, Chairperson, presided over the meeting.

As soon as the meeting commenced, Stalin of DMK, said that the Golden Jubilee year of the Attur Municipality begins on April 1, and asked why no special fund was allotted by the State Government to the municipality for the special occasion.

He sought clarification from the Chairperson whether any request for special fund allotment was made to the State Government. Mr. Stalin drew the attention of the council about the special fund allotment of Rs. 25 lakh to the neighbouring Edappadi Municipality for its Golden Jubilee much in advance.

Ms. Umarani stoutly refused that the State Government was meting out step-motherly treatment to Attur Municipality. She said that the municipality had already written to the State Government about the celebrations, and expressed the hope that the government will sanction special funds at the appropriate time.

Ilayaraja (AIADMK) said that the whole administration will function according to the norms of ‘Amma’ regime and the DMK councillor need not bother about it.

This brought Mr. Stalin again on his toes, when he said that no one knows who was heading the State Government.

Enraged by this, the AIADMK members shouted at DMK Councillors. The DMK too retaliated. Total commotion prevailed, when the Councillors of the rival parties attempted to physically assault each other.

The DMK Councillors alleged that the AIADMK men had assaulted them and walked out of the meeting. The AIADMK Councillors too sought action against the DMK members.
