Conceding to a popular demand, the Tirunelveli Corporation has decided to part with a piece of its land at Melapalayam for the construction of a Sub-Registrar’s office which is functioning in a rented building.

Various organisations, including Tamil Nadu Thowheedh Jamaath, submitted petitions to the Corporation to part with its land. At the Corporation council meeting held on Thursday, members ‘Kurichi’ Sekar and S.S. Hayath made an appeal to Mayor E. Bhuvaneshwari in this regard.

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillors also submitted a petition to the Mayor. Ms. Bhuvaneshwari announced that the civic body would part with the land for the public cause.

She informed that the Tirunelveli Junction bus stand and Vaeinthaakulam new bus stand would soon get airy rooms for mothers to feed their babies in privacy.

Councillor Paramasivan said that damaged play equipment at VOC Ground should be repaired at the earliest to make them safe for children.

DMK councillor Kittu alias Ramakrishnan squatted on the floor in front of the Mayor and charged that no infrastructure development work had been implemented in his ward. Assistant Commissioner of Tirunelveli Zone T. Karuppasamy read out a list of works executed there in the past three years. As Mr. Ramakrishnan continued to raise slogans, Ms. Bhuvaneshwari asked Commissioner R. Lakshmi to initiate disciplinary proceedings against him.

Streetlight issue

Mr. Hayath and Congress councillor T.N. Umapathi Sivan asked the officials to take action against a private firm which was entrusted with the task of maintaining streetlights. “Since the firm has not fulfilled its duty, appropriate action should be taken against it,” they said.
