Core engineering sectors such as automotive, electronics, manufacturing, processing, design and production engineering offer plenty of opportunities to students passing out, said R. Chandrasekaran, president and managing director - Global Delivery, Cognizant.

Delivering the graduation day address at Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering (SVCE), he said that IT was perhaps the biggest career option till a few years ago and a large number of students pursued conventional careers due to parental pressure. “Today, the booming core engineering sector beckons students,” he said.

Emphasising that entrepreneurship was one of the undermined capabilities of the nation, he urged students to start their own enterprises and be innovative. Entry into the professional world could not come at a more opportune time. The fundamental choices students make as individuals would help tap future prospects. “It is imperative to have a mindset that is innovative and global,” he said.

More than 500 graduate and postgraduate students, including 20 university rank holders, were presented degrees and medals. Two students, P. Rajkumar (B.E Marine Engineering) and E. Selvamani (M.E. CAD) secured university gold medals.

A.C. Muthiah, chairman, Governing Council, SVCE, asked students to use knowledge for social change, a change that would feed the underprivileged and that would bring a smile to a child.

Presenting the activity report, R. Ramachandran, principal, SVCE, said that two post graduate programmes, M.E. Computer and Communication and M.Tech. Bio-technology were started in the college this year.

“The college has achieved 98 per cent placement this year,” he said.
