Cops prevent beef biriyani festival in Tiruvannamalai

November 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 08:35 am IST - Tiruvannamalai:

A ‘beef biriyani’ festival organised by the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artists Association (TNPWAA) here on Sunday triggered tension with the police arresting around 50 participants.

Defying police orders, the organisers had conducted the festival near Anna Statue in the town to register their protest against the growing intolerance towards the minorities and the oppressed in the country and the Dadri lynching incident.

According to a TNPWAA office-bearer, the festival organisers wanted to assert the right of the people to choose their food.

A poetry reading session was conducted at the venue where butchers were honoured and participants served beef biriyani.

However, the police denied permission for the event and pasted notices on the doors of the TNPWAA office here intimating them of the same.

But the organisers continued to request the police to get some sort of relief viz. permission to hold festival without serving the beef there or conduct the festival at an alternative venue.

With the police not budging, the organisers decided to defy the ban.
