Convict consumes poison

Mahendran, who was convicted in a murder case and sentenced to undergo life imprisonment, consumed poison in the District Sessions Court here on Friday.

He was admitted to Tiruvarur Medical College Hospital and treated. Mahendran (30) of Alamankurichi near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district and his father-in-law Rajendran were arrested by the police in connection with the murder of Jayaraman, brother of Rajendran in 2012.

On June 23, 2012, Mahendran, Jayaraman, and Rajendran attended a function at Govindakudi.

Following a quarrel, Mahendran and Rajendran stabbed Jayaraman. Jayaraman, who was admitted to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital, died on July 27, 2012.

Judge A. Zahir Husssain of the District Sessions Court on Friday convicted Mahendran and Rajendran and sentenced them to undergo life imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs.1,000 each. On hearing the judgement, Mahendran, who is said to have some poisonous substance in his possession, consumed it on the court premises.
