Chennai Metrowater has initiated the process for setting up another desalination plant by inviting consultants for conducting a feasibility study and preparing the detailed project report.
The proposed facility would have a capacity to treat 200 million litres a day of seawater. This would be twice the capacity of the desalination plant of IVRCL in Minjur and the upcoming facility of Metrowater in Nemmeli.
The consultant would be required to identify the site for the plant and also evaluate the bids.
The Minjur facility was established on the design, build, own, operate and transfer (DBOOT) mode.
The treated water is being supplied to suburbs, including Madhavaram and Manali, apart from localities in north Chennai.
The project was implemented by Chennai Water Desalination Limited, a SPV formed by the consortium of IVRCL and its technical partner Befesa Aqua, Spain.
Work on Metrowater's Nemmeli plant is expected to be completed by this year-end.
It is being constructed by VA Tech Wabag along with IDE Technologies, Israel.
Unlike in the case of the two facilities, joint ventures or consortium would not be allowed to bid for the proposed project.
Metrowater is likely to appoint a consultant for the 200-MLD plant in May.
