The Corporation has decided to appoint a consultant to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for establishing a tertiary treatment plant with reverse osmosis for recycle so that the treated water could be used for industrial use.

Underground Sewerage Scheme (UGSS) is being implemented at a cost of Rs. 149.39 crore under the Tamil Nadu Urban Development Project III. The project includes laying of sewer lines for 421 km to cover all the 60 wards in the corporation limits and construction of four modern Sewage Treatment Plant (STPs) in Anaimedu, Vellakuttai, Vandipet and Mankuttai. Sewage water would be treated in the four STPs and 98 million litres of processed sewage water would be let into River Thirumanimutharu. But with the establishment of new tertiary treatment plant, the processed water would be treated again to reduce biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and also chemical oxygen. The processed water could be used in industries, gardens and also in toilets. A feasibility study would be carried by the consultant for establishing the plant to treat 98 MLD sewage water and to carry the treated water from the plant to the industries and toilets through pipelines. Also, the consultant is required to submit the project cost estimate, funding patterns and also the design of the plant for expansion.

Corporation officials said that Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL) has selected five corporations and two municipalities in the State for implementing the new project.

They added that the cost towards appointing the consultant would be met from Project Development Grant Fund and the proposal would be forward to TNUIFSL through Commissioner of Municipal Administration.
