The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) representatives on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to the authorities demanding justice to members of Construction Workers Welfare Board.
Benefits mandated in the Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board were being denied to the members, AITUC district secretary S. Chinnasamy complained.
Construction workers took exception to what they described as failure on the part of the State Government to hold periodic meetings of the Board, and discrepancies in nominating members to the Board.
Despite the membership exceeding Rs. 20 lakh and a corpus of Rs. 900 crore, the construction workers were denied entitled benefits, the AITUC representatives complained, demanding Rs. 10 lakh as compensation payment for accident death, Rs. 5 lakh for natural death, Rs. 25,000 for conduct of last rites, Rs. 60,000 as maternity benefit, Rs. 1 lakh for marriage assistance, and Rs. 5,000 as pension.
Pension must be paid to women above the age of 50 years and men over 55 years, he said.
They sought five cents of land to each member, and a free house, besides meeting of educational expenses of children.
