Union Shipping Minister G.K. Vasan on Saturday expressed certainty about the Congress party faring well and posting victories in several Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu.

Mr. Vasan, who was here to campaign for the party candidates of Erode and Tirupur Lok Sabha constituencies: P. Gopi and E.V.K.S. Elangovan, expressed confidence that the voters were aware of the socio-economic impact of Central Government-sponsored schemes such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and the group housing scheme.

For the group housing scheme, for instance, the Central Government provides 75 per cent of the funds, and the State contributes only 15 per cent, and the beneficiary the remaining 10 per cent. The attempt by the State Government to conceal the Centre’s funding for the schemes will not succeed, Mr. Vasan said.

The opportunity to contest alone would result in victories for the Congress, Mr. Vasan said, after inaugurating the election section for Erode parliamentary constituency at the party office here.

District-level functionaries E.P. Ravi, S.V. Saravanan and P. Vijayakumar, and State-level functionaries Vidiyal S. Sekar P.C. Gowthaman were present on the occasion.

Mr. Vasan campaigned for the party candidates at Kalingarayanpalayam, Bhavani, Anthiyur, Athani, Kallipatti, T.N. Palayam, Gobichettipalayam, Kavindapadi, Perundurai, Kunnathur and Perumanallur.
