AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Wednesday said though the Congress was trying to project itself as a role model for impeccable public morality, it had not emerged with a halo around it, because of the continued presence of A. Raja in the Union Cabinet as the Minister of Telecommunications.
In a statement here, she also called upon the people of the country to send a one-line telegram to the President , demanding the dismissal of Mr. Raja.
The spectrum scam had caused, according to calculations worked out by the Comptroller & Auditor General of India, loss to the Indian exchequer to the extent of Rs.1,76,379 crore, she said.
Ms. Jayalalithaa said though the Congress asked Shashi Tharoor to quit as Union Minister, dropped Suresh Kalmadi from his powerful office as secretary of the Congress Parliamentary Party and removed Ashok Chavan as Chief Minister of Maharashtra in the wake of allegations against them, it could not muster the courage to demand Mr. Raja's resignation.
It is worried that such a precipitate demand would end up with Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi pulling out of the fragile UPA coalition leading to its premature collapse, she added.
