Union Shipping Minister G.K.Vasan on Wednesday said it was inappropriate to describe the Congress as a “weak party” as the party had always been instrumental in ensuring the victory of the DMK and the AIADMK in the past.

“In the last 47 years, it was our presence that made the alliance [with either of them] victorious,” he told reporters at the Sathyamurthy Bhavan here.

On his meeting with DMDK leader Vijayakant, he said he met the DMDK leader to wish his son Shanmuga Pandian's entry into the film world. “When leaders of two political parties meet, naturally politics will also come up for discussion. We had a detailed discussion on the political situation in the country and in Tamil Nadu,” he said.

Mr. Vasan said the Union government had been taking steps to find a permanent solution to the problems faced by fishermen of Tamil Nadu from the Sri Lankan Army and everyone should support its efforts.

“Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had arranged a meeting between the fishermen from Tamil Nadu and those of Sri Lanka. All the stakeholders, including the Tamil Nadu government, the Sri Lankan government and the fishermen representatives, should stand by the Indian government,” he said.

On the Prime Ministerial candidate for the Congress, he said Rahul Gandhi would be the unanimous choice.
