Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko on Sunday criticised the Congress party on the 2G spectrum allocation issue.
Contending that the Congress had inflicted a blot on democracy, Mr. Vaiko, who referred to Union Communication Minister Kapil Sibal's criticism of Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), said Mr. Sibal had pointed out that 2001 as an important period but did not state the fact that the number of users was just 40 lakh in 2001 as against the current subscriber base of 35 crore. Besides, there was absolutely no competition in 2001 to get licences.
Moreover, the department did not receive even adequate applications, he observed. “If there was no scam, why the former Union Telecom Minister A. Raja was asked to resign by the Prime Minister?” he asked.
It was the paramount duty of the voters to defeat the DMK-Congress alliance in the coming elections, Mr. Vaiko added.
