“Congress can win several posts on its own in local body polls”

Says party workers are happy over decision to go it alone

The Congress will be able to win a significant number of posts on its own in the local body elections, former Union Minister and senior party leader E.V.K.S. Elangovan said here on Wednesday.

“The Congress workers across the State are happy about the party's decision to go it alone and they are working hard for the party's electoral win. A few parties had approached the Congress to form an alliance, but we are firm on our decision to contest alone this time,” he told media persons.

The election, he said, was also an opportunity for the Congress to ascertain its support base in the State and initiate efforts to strengthen the party from the grassroots level.

Mr. Elangovan said that during the election campaign, the party would call for devolution of more powers to local bodies based on the Panchayati Raj Act.

The Dravidian parties that came to power in the State after the Congress had made the elected local bodies powerless.

On whether the party would support the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate in the Tiruchi (West) by-poll, Mr. Elangovan said the party cadres would act according to their conscience.

Later, he introduced Congress nominee for Erode Mayor's post Rajesh Rajappa and released the list of nominees for various posts in the local bodies in the district.
