The annual district level dance, music, art competitions for school students conducted by the State Department of Art and Culture evoked overwhelming response here on Friday.

The competitions were held at the Government Music School at Thalavaipatti on the outskirts of the city.

More than 300 boys and girls participated in the competitions held in two categories – senior level for students of Standards VIII to Plus-One; and junior level for students of Standards VI and VII.

The drawing competition attracted the maximum number of students (150), followed by bharathanatyam competition (75); singing (50); and folk dance (25).

While the bharathanatyam, singing and folk dance events were held in the morning, the drawing competition was held in the evening. The topics for drawing competition were ‘animals with their kids’ for the junior category and ‘natural calamity’ for the senior category.

The participants in the singing competition rendered only Tamil compositions and the students of advance level classical vocal too were allowed to participate and display their talents.

The students participating in the folk dance events presented karagam, kavadi, thappattam, oyilattam, and poikal kuthirai.

The prizes to the winners will be distributed at the inaugural of the drama festival planned shortly, according to B. Hemanathan, Regional Assistant Director of Department of Art and Culture.
