Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi on Thursday promised voters that his first signature as Chief Minister would be for ushering in prohibition in the State.

Campaigning for DMK and Muslim League candidates at Villupuram, Mr. Karunanidhi said, “I categorically assure you this. My first signature will be for bringing prohibition in the State if I were to be chosen as Chief Minister again.”

Ridiculing Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa for her promise of bringing prohibition in a phased manner, the DMK president said his party advocated a special law for implementing complete prohibition in a single stroke.

Stating that his party is determined to eradicate the ill-effects of alcohol consumption, he also said his government would penalise people who consumed alcohol with imprisonment.

He also charged that the Chief Minister failed to fulfil any of the promises made to the public. Giving an explanation on why he is still active on the campaign trail, Mr. Karunanidhi said, “We are ready to sacrifice for the sake of people. Now I am 93 years old and even if I turn 103, I will dedicate myself to people as it is my duty to protect them.”

Earlier, Mr. Karunanidhi addressed electorate at Perambalur en route Ulundurpet from Tiruchi.
