College students ransack canteen

August 09, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 07:44 am IST - VELLORE:

Students of Voorhees College on Monday damaged the college canteen as the contractor was reportedly serving poor quality food and often verbally abusing the students and faculty members using obscene words.

According to college sources, Arul Raj was running the canteen for the past one year. His brother had often verbally abused the staff and students coming to the canteen.

“He regularly threatened students, who are given the responsibility of organising department meetings, not to order and bring food from outside and to place orders only with him. The quality of food served was also not good,” a college staffer said.

On Friday last, he used obscene words and threatened a senior faculty member. This irked the students, which led to tension on Monday. The students, demanding an apology from Arul Raj, went on to damage the canteen.

“The college principal later convened a meeting of teaching and non-teaching staff members. It was unanimously decided to cancel the canteen agreement,” the staffer said.

Following the agitation by students, the college suspended classes on Monday and Tuesday. The faculty member has lodged a complaint against Arul Raj with the Vellore South Police.
