District Collector S. Prabhakar has warned that stringent action would be initiated against persons involving in prize schemes that intend to cheat consumers.

A press release said that the district administration had received complaints from consumers that a few commercial establishments in order to increase their sales had announced various prize schemes during the festival season. By increasing the maximum retail price of the products, selling sub-standard and adulterated products, consumers were cheated by these firms, the release said.

Mr. Prabhakar asked people not to believe in prize schemes as many were intended to cheat the consumers. He said that people involved in cheating would be booked under various provisions of Tamil Nadu Prize Schemes (Prohibition) Act, 1979 and action would be taken accordingly.

The release also warned that stringent action would be taken against shopkeepers if they were found selling sub-standard or adulterated products to the consumers.

Only quality products should be sold to the consumers and complaints related to adulterated products or sub-standard products can be lodged with the district administration, the release added.
