Encroachments made for about 6.50 km on the bank of Paappaankulam channel under Karuppanadhi dam irrigation system will be removed shortly as these illegal constructions are obstructing the flow of water, Collector M. Jayaraman has said.
Addressing the mass contact programme held at Krishnapuram near Kadayanallur on Wednesday, Mr. Jayaraman said the decision to remove the encroachments was taken after the affected farmers raised this issue in the grievance day meeting held at the Collectorate on February 19. All illegal constructions on the bank of the channel would be removed only after alternative arrangements were made for those who had constructed houses on this stretch.
“Since we'll ensure alternative arrangement to the people to be affected by this encroachment eviction drive, everyone concerned should cooperate with the district administration,” Mr. Jayaraman said.
The Collector, while informing the public that the recent outbreak of viral fever at Kadayanallur had been totally controlled, appealed to them to ensure cent per cent sanitation in the residential areas by constructing toilets in every house so that outbreak of contagious diseases would not be occur.
He informed that steps were on to procure seven harvesters through the Department of Agricultural Engineering for the benefit of the farmers during the harvest season.
Mr. Jayaraman distributed free house site pattas to 15 persons, sewing machines to 5 beneficiaries, subsidy for drip irrigation to 13 farmers, cheques for Rs. 10,000 each to 7 agriculturists under Farmers' Social Security Scheme, order for receiving old age monthly pension of Rs. 400 each to 50 persons, patta transfer order to three applicants, ration cards to 12 families, assistance of Rs. 15,000 each to 10 former bootleggers.
