Coimbatore’s industries are an attraction to many in other districts and States who are looking out for a job. When they come to Coimbatore, many of these job seekers first go to the industrial estate at Kurichi. The Coimbatore SIDCO Industrial Estate Manufacturers’ Association plans to establish a facility soon that will create a data base of those who come to the estate in search of work and also the vacancies at the units, says P. Anbazhagan, president of the association.
The SIDCO Industrial Estate at Kurichi, which houses about 600 units, does not have a system in place now to guide these workers to the units that have vacancies. The units employ nearly 10,000 workers and the shortage is for 2,000.
The units need skilled and unskilled workers, including fitters, turners, and machinists.
The association’s office is near the front gate. “We plan to collect their resume and create a database. Our member units can go through the database and recruit according to their requirement,” he said.
While this is an immediate measure, the association also plans to set up an industrial training institute to train workers.
The association has identified two acres for this purpose. It plans to submit a proposal to the Government for assistance for the project. While the Government will give the land, the association will have to create the infrastructure and get approval from the agencies concerned to offer the courses. It is looking at programmes that will have four days a week training at the industries with stipend, he said. Apart from efforts to meet the manpower requirement, the association is also considering natural gas pipeline to each unit at the estate.
The units at the Kurichi estate need about 35 MW. The natural gas pipeline will bring down the power cost and also ensure uninterrupted power supply, he said.
