The Christian Medical College, Vellore, will be celebrating the World Day for Safety and Health at Work on the CMC Hospital campus here on April 28.
According to a CMC release, the International Labour Organisation has been observing the Day every year on April 28 from 2003 onwards. It is done to emphasise the need for a safe and healthy work environment at all levels. It is hoped that employers and workers actively participate in securing a safe and healthy work environment through a system of defined rights, responsibilities and duties. The highest priority is given to the principle of prevention.
The theme for the 2015 World Day for Safety and Health at Work is ‘Join in building a culture of prevention on OSH (Occupational Safety and Health).’ In CMC, various occupational teams have been working on identifying and preventing occupational health issues.
Back pain is a common hazard encountered by staff, and back exercise-based prevention culture has been established in several departments. Employees working in noisy environments have been taught preventive measures and annual surveillance for hearing problems has been instituted. A major thrust in prevention of radiation hazards has been instituted.
Essay and logo competitions were conducted in connection with the celebration. The prizes will be awarded to the winners during the celebrations which will begin held at the area between the ISSCC building and Student Nurses Hostel on the Main Hospital campus at 8.30 a.m. on April 28.
