‘Cleanliness guards’ stage protest

July 05, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - Tiruvannamalai: ‘Cleanliness guards

’ employed in solid waste management work in panchayats staged a dharna in front of the Collectorate on Monday demanding that the authorities allowed them to remain in service.

The workers said that they segregate biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste and also did a commendable job in cleaning garbage and slush in Chennai following the December 2015 floods.

“However, there was a talk that our services would be discontinued as we have completed 100 days of work and new persons would be brought in for the work. We gave up other jobs to join as cleanliness guards. Therefore, the government should ensure that we continue to do the work,” the protesters said.
