Civic body launches UGD work in Hasthampatti zone

The underground drainage work for Hasthampatti zone was launched by the Salem Corporation on Thursday.

S. Soundappan, Mayor, inaugurated the works at Rajarajan nagar in the presence of MLAs M. K. Selvaraj and G. Venkatachalam, and Corporation Commissioner K. R. Selvaraj. The State Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department sanctioned Rs. 149.39 crore for the execution of the UGD project in Salem Corporation.

The Corporation right earnestly launched the works of laying the drainage pipelines and construction of the treatment plant. The works could not progress under phase I and phase III due to the inordinate delay by the respective contractors.

The Corporation immediately cancelled the contract and allotted the works to the new contractors. As such, administrative sanction was given for the revised estimates of Rs. 19.27 crore for the works under phase I and Rs. 50.20 crore under phase III. Under phase I, sanitary pipelines will be laid to a length of 63.36 km and UGD connection will be given to a length of 77.7 km. Under phase III, pipelines will be laid to a length of 136.57 km and housing connection to length of 196.21 km.

A release of K. R. Selvaraj, Corporation Commissioner, said that the UGD works will be speeded up and will be completed at the earliest.

He said the pits dug in the residential localities and main thoroughfares for laying the pipes will be closed then and there to ensure that normal life of people is not affected. He called upon people to cooperate for the completion of the project.
