The Chennai airport will have 24 new self check-in kiosks at the domestic and international terminals to address the problem of increasing congestion.

Though there are a few kiosks now, there is a need for additional ones as the terminals are choked during peak hours, officials said. There will be 16 such kiosks in the domestic terminal and eight in the international terminal, an official said.

Business travellers

“The domestic terminal gets very crowded between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. This terminal particularly has passengers travelling on business to Mumbai and Delhi, who will not have any baggage. For their convenience, we decided to have more kiosks,” he added. Passengers say the additional kiosks are welcome as it will help them complete the check-in procedures quickly.

Ranjan Kumar, a frequent flyer, said, “Many passengers who take the morning flights travel light with just cabin baggage and it will be helpful for them.”

Shankar R., another passenger, said it was only months after he began travelling frequently that he noticed the kiosks.

“I think that since there were fewer kiosks, I missed them. After 3-4 months, I accidentally saw the kiosks and began using them. When there is a rush and everyone stands in a line for the check-in, the tendency is to follow that. Now that there will be more kiosks, many will start using them,” Mr. Shankar added.
