Second phase of polio campaign on Feb. 22

Polio drops were administered to over 2.72 lakh children in the first phase of pulse polio immunisation conducted on Sunday. The second phase of the camp would be held on February 22.

Collector M. Karunakaran, who inaugurated the programme at Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, said 1,667 centres, including 1,522 centres in the rural areas 145 centres in urban areas had been established for the immunisation apart from the mobile centres to immunize 2,07,570 rural children and 64,455 children from urban areas.

In Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, drops would be administered for three days from Sunday (January 18) and all primary health centres would give the drops from Sunday to Saturday (January 24).

A total of 923 personnel from Department of Public Health, 58 persons from Department of Education, 3,352 nutritious meal scheme workers, 2,176 volunteers and members of Rotary International participated in the exercise.

Kanyakumari

A total of 1.56 lakh children were administered the drops across Kanyakumari district.

Collector Sajjansingh R. Chavan inaugurated the campaign at Kanyakumari Government Medical College Hospital. The drops were administered through 1,246 camps.

Tuticorin

Tourism Minister S.P. Shanmuganathan inaugurated the campaign at Tuticorin old bus stand in the presence of Collector M. Ravikumar.

A total of 1,150 booths were set up in the district. About 89 per cent of children had been covered until 5 p.m. under Tuticorin Corporation limits, City Health Officer Pradeep V. Krishnakumar said. In 58 booths, 22,218 children had been covered against the target of 24,889 children. While 1,295 children had been covered in Tuticorin bus stands, 439 children were given the drops at Tuticorin Keelur and Melur railway stations. Besides, 362 children were administered the drops at Tuticorin GH.
