Children, who could outsmart elders in handling Android smart mobile phones, handled tablets with ease and surprised everyone when officials of Sarva Siksha Abiyan (SSA) test-launched digital learning under the new ‘pedagogy method’ here on Wednesday.

After selecting 10 government schools in the district for implementing the revamped pedagogy system, the government distributed 109 tablets to the children to fine-tune Activity-Based Learning (ABL) and the children of Vallal Pari Municipal Middle School here did not find any difficulty in adapting to digital learning.

The new methodology was introduced for children of Classes I to III and five children were registered in each tablet. Soon after the teacher shared the day’s lesson, using her tablet, the children opened the page and went through the stages with ease, clicking the right answers at the end. After a child completed his/her exercise, the tablet was handed over to another child in the group.

D. Varadarajan, system coordinator from the SSA, Chennai, watched in awe as Class II children quickly adapted to the system without hiccups. They were also given textbooks and workbooks with QR code, which could be scanned and read using smart phones and tablets at home, the officials said.

D. Esther Veni, headmistress, said the children not only adapted to digital learning system under the new methodology quickly but also enjoyed activity-based learning with audio-visual support. “We were initially sceptical about it, but the children proved us wrong and handled tablets with ease,” she said.

The methodology would be introduced in 3,000 government schools throughout the State next year, the officials said.
