Child workers rescued

Intervention by Child Welfare and Labour Welfare officials ensured that an eight-year-old boy sent on hire by his parents for gazing cows and seven other children employed in auto mechanic shops were rescued in the district.

Child Welfare Officer Manimaran, Mannargudi All Woman Police Station Inspector Kamakshi and Child Line Nodal Officer Prahladhan under a Central government initiative launched an intensive drive to eradicate child labour in Tiruvarur district.

During their intervention they found a boy grazing cows near the Kamalapuram Pandavaiyaru bridge near here and upon interrogation of the boy it was found that the parents of the eight-year-old from Ramanathapuram had sent him on hire for a fee of Rs.30,000.

The boy, the fifth issue of Nagarajan and Shanthi, was then re-united with his parents.

During their searches around Manargudi the officials also ensured that seven other children who were employed in automobile mechanic and grocery shops were rehabilitated.
