The marriage of a 17-year-old girl with that of a 29-year-old man was stopped following intervention of officials here on Friday.

Childline 1098 received information about the marriage to be performed in Erumapatty block.

A team led by Village Administrative Officer Rajakannu, Revenue Inspector Vasantha, G. Ramalakshmi from Childline, Special Sub-Inspector Tamilselvi from Anti-Human Trafficking Wing, and officials from District Child Protection Unit and Social Welfare Department visited the girl’s house.

Inquiries revealed that engagement was over and the marriage was scheduled for May.

The Class 9 girl’s parents were labourers and they decided to conduct the marriage with the man, who is their relative.

Officials explained about the rules and said that marriage could be performed for her after she completes 18 years.

A written statement was obtained from the parents and they were asked to produce the girl before the Child Welfare Committee on Tuesday.
