The marriage of a 15-year-old girl with a 27-year-old man that was scheduled to take place on Sunday in Puduchatram block was stopped by the officials here on Saturday.

Childline 1098 received information about the scheduled marriage and verified the details of the girl.

After confirming that the girl’s age was less than 18 years, they informed the police and revenue officials. On Saturday, Village Administrative Officer Prabha, Special Sub-Inspector Rajendran, and P. Gomathi and R. Dinesh from Childline 1098, inspected the house and found marriage preparations on.

The Class X girl is a relative of the groom, who is an auto driver, and resides in the same village. Their engagement was conducted earlier. The girl’s parents were labourers and hence, they decided to perform the marriage during Pongal holidays as schools were closed. The girl expressed her willingness to continue her studies. Both the parents were warned and written statement was received from them assuring that marriage would not be performed for her till she completes 18 years.

The girl’s parents were asked to produce her before the Child Welfare Committee on Tuesday.
