Chief Minister reviews monsoon preparedness

Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Monday issued a number of directions to the Collectors of Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur that were affected in the recent rains.

In a video conference with the Collectors and Superintendents of Police of the two districts, the Chief Minister asked officials of all departments to be prepared to undertake preventive measures and relief operations as the monsoon is expected to pick up in the coming weeks, a State government press release said.

Since many farmlands in the coastal districts are submerged in the rains, the Chief Minister said action must be taken to create channels to let the water drain, and once the water is drained, farmers should be provided with fertilisers to save the standing crop.

He also instructed that necessary arrangements for food, clean drinking water and medicines be made for those who stay at relief camps.

Also, in collaboration with the Health department, mobile medical camps and permanent camps must be set up, he said, and directed that pipe culverts be converted to box culverts to ensure free flow of water.

The Chief Minister also asked the officials to take precautionary measures to prevent people from taking shelter in old and dilapidated buildings.
