Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Sunday announced a slew of measures to improve sports facilities in the State.
An official release stated that Rs.1.56 crore would be spent towards installing four high-mast lamps at the Nehru stadium, Coimbatore, for competitions at night and two 75 KVA diesel generators. For this work, 50 per cent of the amount would be given by the government as subsidy while the rest would be met from the funds of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu. A sum of Rs. 10 lakh has been allocated for the Chief Minister’s Cup for badminton.
The release further added that 80 posts of coach would be created to encourage sportspersons to compete in national and international level events. This would be in addition to 139 existing posts.
They would be given a monthly salary of Rs.8,000 on contract basis. The additional expenditure for this would be Rs.76.80 lakh.
Ms. Jayalalithaa also allocated Rs.1 crore each for swimming pools in Namakkal and Thiruvallur.
