Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Friday submitted before the Madras High Court that he never indulged in malpractices in Sivaganga constituency during the 2009 Parliamentary poll.
Mr. Chidambaram made this submission in his counter affidavit to the election petition filed by the AIADMK candidate Raja Kannappan challenging his election to Parliament from the Sivaganga constituency.
Counsel for Mr. Chidambaram filed the counter affidavit when the matter came up for hearing before Justice K. Venkataraman.
Stating that all allegations of poll-related malpractices were “purely speculative” and did not constitute corrupt practice in any manner, Mr. Chidambaram also said that he had not authorised anyone, including his son, to distribute money.
Describing the allegation that his son Karthi Chidambaram was trying to bribe voters as “too vague,” he said his son was not his poll agent. He dismissed as a “concocted story,” the allegation that cash was recovered from his vehicle.
