National general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party P. Muralidhar Rao has said Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram was responsible for the complete failure of the United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre in the last 10 years.

Reacting to Mr. Chidambaram’s description of BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi as ‘encounter Chief Minister’, the BJP leader said he had no space in the media and hence started attacking Mr. Modi.

“Mr. Chidambaram was scared even to contest from his constituency. He is the most discredited person who is responsible for the debacle (of the UPA government). It is unfortunate that he is criticising Mr. Modi,” he said while addressing a press conference here on Sunday.

Asked about the poor turnout for BJP president Rajnath Singh’s rallies in Thanjavur and Karaikudi on Friday, Mr. Rao said he was not concerned about the number of people who attended the meetings but the seats the National Democratic Alliance would win in the Lok Sabha elections.

“State neglected” “The public opinion is in favour of the NDA, and mobilisation of cadres for rallies should not be made an issue,” he noted.

Alleging that the Congress and corruption would go together, Mr. Rao said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa could never claim to be a champion of Tamil Nadu’s interests because the State remained neglected for long.

“Mr. Modi has come from the deprived section of the society, and empowerment politics climaxed with his reaching the top position. The Congress will disappear forever from Tamil Nadu,” he said.

An alternative He said the NDA had emerged as an alternative to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam not only in political terms but also in direction and content.
