The State government’s move to double load shedding duration of Chennai to two hours from Thursday has paid immediate dividends as the southern districts experienced a marked improvement in power supply through the day.
M.R. Rajendran, president of Kappalur Industrial Estate Manufacturers’ Association, with around 250 small units employing 12,000 workers in the estate, told The Hindu that power cuts were reduced to six hours during day time on Thursday from the earlier eight hours.
Further, the quality of power had also improved as there were no frequent disruptions in power supply, which was the norm earlier. The authorities had also assured the industrial estate that power supply would be provided continuously at night.
Improved supply
P. Sitaraman, founder-president and current executive committee of Plastic Manufacturers’ Association of Madurai (PLASMA), said that industries received power from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Also, the officials had assured to provide continuous supply from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Welcoming the move, Tamil Nadu Small and Tiny Industries Association (TANSTIA) vice-president K.R. Gnanasambandan said that the Chief Minister’s move to form a committee to review the power situation would be of help to the industry.
However, he added that the government must also consult the trade and industry associations and brief them on the power situation.
Major demand
Increasing the load shedding to the State capital was a major demand of trade and industry bodies in the south Tamil Nadu. While the daily requirement of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), Madurai Region, which comprises five southern districts of Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram, was around 1,100 MW, Chennai alone consumed more than 2,400 MW.
According to TANGEDCO sources, most of the urban areas in the Madurai Region were given only three to four hours of load shedding during daytime instead of the usual eight hours. However, the official said that widespread rains in the State could also have played a part in providing relief from power cuts.

As in the past TN govt should consider advising industries to work on alternative week which
will help latter to work continuously and optima resources and maintain output withou much
Los of resources including power, labour etc.
Such an uninterupted availability of resources wil also hue welcomed by all
Entire Tamil Nadu is going dark with all activities coming to a standstill, is it not a sign we are living under such a terrible "modern" stone age? Every party & government is corrupt to the core.
There can be NO LONG TERM SOLUTION to the infrastructure-problems plaguing India, as long as no drastic measures are taken to control the current growth-rate of the population.
As though 121 crores is not ridiculous enough, Indians are just not serious about tackling this issue which will soon become a crippling problem unless addressed right away.
Unfortunately, there is hardly anyone in India with enough sense to even give this problem the importance it deserves.
Listen all of you - power plants DONT grow on trees - and there are
many power stations waiting for commissioning - like North Chennai 1 &
2, Vallur, Mettur, Tuticorin and Udangadi. Out of which Mettur had
some problems due to the boiler which fell in the Yamuna river has
been returned, North Chennai 2 and Vallur will start generating close
to 900MW in a months time, North Chennai 1 has some technical glitches
while BHEL has been put on hold for the Udangadi plant construction.
Jaya wanted to get all power from Kudankulam and she wrote to the PM
asking for it in the wake of the poor power situation but to no avail
- the Centre didnt respond and TN people are stupidly protesting
against it... the DMK is still with the centre but they choose to not
help TN people by using their position to demand power/incentives -
what do you all want the ADMK to do? She has no option but to wait
till the already existing projects are finished - so stop blabbering
and wait...
During campaign for Pudukkottai by election on 9-8 June this year Hon C
M has said that she herself monitoring the power situation, assuring the
public there would be no power cut and the T N will become electricity
surplus state. But on the other hand the situation becomes worst and
worst. No hope for immediate relief from power cut. It is clear
betrayal of voters faith in this Government.
Every power plant and Substation was not functioning as it should be. Added to that no other new generation source was created by DMK govt'. When such was the case, is it by magic that AIADMK can produce electric power.THERE IS NO POINT IN BLAMING THE PRESENT GOVT'. We need to resort to Power generation by using Solar,Wave Power and by using methane powered motor as prime mover.I implore the AIADMK govt' to spend money and implement all these projects to improve power position.
How come its a Gain for us when we have only 8 hour power a day..?
How come its pain for Chennai? when they have only 2 hour power cuts a
day...
The title is not appropriate..
There is no need for special treatment for chennai. it is consuming 30 - 40% of tamilnadu electricity needs, which has only 1/7 population of tamilnadu. no harm in having 2 more hrs of power cut if rest of tamilnadu is having 10 - 14 hrs of powerc ut a day
AIADMK has failed to implement its election manifesto from which it came to power even after 2 years. The government should have started taking corrective action for more power generation that was the priority than implementing freebies. People will show their power in next election.
