Robbers target women sleeping by the window

Robbers struck on a Chennai-bound train during the early hours of Sunday, robbing six women of 25 sovereigns of gold chains.

The robbers snatched the chains from the women, who were sleeping by the window, after pulling the emergency chain of the train near Paaraiyur at 1 a.m.

According to personnel attached to the Government Railway Police (GRP), Jolarpet, the passengers were aboard the Bengaluru City – Chennai Central Mail.

Some of the robbers could have boarded the train and travelling in it when they pulled the emergency chain to bring the train to a halt at Paaraiyur, nearly 2 km from Pachur, an officer said.

When the train stopped, men waiting on the track snatched the chains of six women sleeping close to the windows from outside the train.

Easy prey

The six women were travelling in three sleeper class coaches – S1, S3,and S6. Gold chains weighing 25 sovereigns were snatched from them, he said.

Police have formed teams and have launched investigation into the case.

In November last year, a gang of robbers struck at two trains and snatched gold chains weighing 13.5 sovereigns from five passengers, including four women, when the trains halted at a signal 2 km from Katpadi. The robbers struck from outside the coaches of Chennai-bound Nilgiris Express and Mysore Express, within 10 minutes when the trains halted at the signal one after the other.
