Charges framed in jail riots case

Twelve years after the riots in Central Prison here, in which two jail officials were killed, charges were framed before a sessions court here on Thursday against 27 persons. Anandan, Babu and 25 others have been charged with offences including murder, attempt to murder, rioting and under the Tamil Nadu Public Property (Prevention of Destruction and Loss) Act.

The charges were framed by IV Additional Sessions Judge S. Rajagopalan. The incident on November 17, 1999 came in the wake of the death of a prisoner, ‘Boxer' Vadivelu, after he was hospitalised for a stomach ailment.
