The Champions League Twenty20 cricket tournament, involving top T20 teams from various countries, will now attract entertainment tax in Tamil Nadu.
The Champions League will be held in September-October in India, and some of the matches are likely to be played in Chennai.
A bill seeking to include the tournament within the definition of the term entertainment and to levy entertainment tax was introduced in the State Assembly on Tuesday.
Commercial Taxes and Registration Minister B.V. Ramana, who moved the bill, said the Champions League Twenty 20 cricket tournament was played among top domestic teams from major cricket playing nations.
Amendment
Therefore, the government decided to amend the Tamil Nadu Entertainments Act 1939 suitably to include in the definition.
He said cricket tournaments conducted by the Indian Premier League had recently been included in the definition of the term entertainment.
