“Chalk out procession route”

September 09, 2010 12:01 am | Updated 12:01 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Madras High Court has directed the Tiruvarur Collector to convene a meeting of all concerned and decide the route for taking out the procession of Vinayaka idols at Muthupet in Tiruthuraipoondi taluk.

In its order on a writ petition, the First Bench, comprising Chief Justice M.Y. Eqbal and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, said if no consensus was arrived at the meeting, it should be the prerogative of the Collector, in consultation with the Superintendent of Police (SP), to decide the route as also the date and time by which the procession would be taken out to avert law and order problems.

In his petition, C. Ramalingam, who is the secretary of the Vinayakar Procession Coordination Committee, sought a direction to authorities to permit the procession at Muthupet in accordance with religious and customary practice by passing through the necessary temples on the regular route used to be taken for several decades.
