The post of Chairperson in four out of seven municipalities in Virudhunagar district has been reserved for women for the general election to local bodies to be held on October 17 and 19. Similarly, the post of Chairperson in five out of nine town panchayats has been reserved for women, including one belonging to the Scheduled Castes.
Among the hundreds of posts at various levels in the local bodies of urban and rural areas, only one post for panchayat member has been reserved for Scheduled Tribe.
In a statement, Collector M. Balaji said that the post of Chairperson in the municipalities of Rajapalayam, Sivakasi and Aruppukottai was open to all, while the post in Virudhunagar, Srivilliputtur, Sattur and Tiruthangal had been reserved for women (general).
Town panchayat
The post of Chairperson in Mallankinaru town panchayat was the only seat open for all. Four seats — Kariapatti, Chettiarpatti, Seithur and S. Kodikulam had been reserved for women (general); Mamsapuram, Sundarapandiyam and W. Pudupatti reserved for SC (general) while Watrap for SC women.
The post of District Panchayat President was open for all.
Panchayat union
The post of Panchayat Union Chairperson in Srivilliputtur, Sivakasi, Virudhunagar, Aruppukottai and Tiruchuzhi unions was open to all while the post in Watrap, Vembakottai and Narikudi reserved for women (general); Sattur and Kariyapatti for SC (general); and Rajapalayam for SC women.
