Chairperson, councillors end sit-in dharna

Regional Director for Municipal Administration assures them that pending works would be taken up soon

August 31, 2016 01:31 am | Updated 01:31 am IST - Nagercoil:

The five-day-long sit-in dharna staged by a few councillors of Nagercoil municipality and chairperson Meena Dev came to an end on Tuesday after officials assured them that the pending development works and the laying of damaged roads would be taken up shortly.

After All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillors staged a walkout from the council meeting held on last Friday and staged a demonstration against the municipal administration for not properly implementing development works utilising State government funds, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Congress councillors started a sit-in dharna in the council hall. They alleged that most of the roads in the town remained damaged and the tenders floated for a few contracts were yet to be awarded to commence the work.

With pressure mounting on her, Ms. Meena too joined the protestors, saying “non-cooperation” by the officials was the reason for the civic issues prevailing in the town.

As the sit-in dharna entered the fifth day on Tuesday, Regional Director for Municipal Administration Sultana met the protestors and pacified them with the assurance that the pending works including relaying of damaged roads would be taken up shortly, following which the agitation was withdrawn.

Ms. Meena said the agitation was withdrawn in the evening after the officials assured them that administrative sanction and work orders for 60 works, to be executed on an outlay of Rs. 2 crore, would be given shortly, and a decision on implementing another Rs. 8 crore-worth work would be taken up after placing it before the high-level committee.
