A constable sustained deep stab injuries on the chest and hip while his colleague suffered a heavy blow on the head with an iron rod when they tried to nab two chain-snatchers at Sivanthipatti near Palayamkottai on Tuesday.

Police sources said that K. Rajeshwari (24) of Vaagaikulam was going on a moped to visit her mother at Kuththukkal. On the way, two unidentified youth riding a bike attacked her with an iron rod.

She fell from the two-wheeler and suffered a bleeding head injury. The youths snatched her gold chain, weighing five sovereigns, and escaped. After recovering from the shock, Ms. Rajeshwari informed her relatives in Sivanthipatti about the incident over her mobile phone. They alerted the Sivanthipatti police, who launched a hunt for the duo.

Head Constable Selvaraj (42) and constable Gnanavel found the culprits going on the bike near Sivanthipatti. When Mr. Selvaraj tried to nab the pillion rider, he attacked him with the iron rod. Mr. Selvaraj managed to push him down even as Mr. Gananavel chased his associate, who stabbed him and fled. Once Mr. Selvaraj relaxed his grip on the culprit in an effort to save his colleague, the duo escaped.

Special police teams have been formed to nab the chain-snatchers. “All-out efforts have been initiated to nab the culprits…,” Superintendent of Police Asra Garg said.
