Central government should intervene in the Mullaperiyar Dam issue without being lethargic as in other issues, said former Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin here on Wednesday.
Addressing a human chain protest here, he said the DMK would continue its fight in protecting the interests of the people in five districts.
“We hope that the State government at the special Assembly session scheduled tomorrow (Thursday) too will pass a resolution keeping in mind welfare of farmers and people.”
The Opposition parties and the allies of the AIADMK were unanimous in their support for farmers in the issue, he pointed out.
Narrating the reasons for the tension in State borders, Mr. Stalin said that political parties in Kerala took up the dam issue only to win an Assembly seat in Ernakulam district. The Congress had to win the seat to stay in government. Any defeat in the by-election would land the Congress in trouble. So it had decided to betray Tamil Nadu, he stated.
When all political parties urged the government to convene the Assembly session to take a decision on the issue, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, who initially refused, announced that the special session would be convened on December 15, the day the DMK planned to organise the fast, he said. Since the DMK president did not want to politicise the issue, the proposed fast was advanced, he explained. Over, 10,000 partymen formed 8-km-long human chain from Collectorate to Palanichettipatti.
The police erected barricade on the Theni-Kumili Highway near PC Patty and prevented the crowd from proceeding to Chinnamanur. Earlier, the party planned to form human chain up to Seelayampatti.
