Census operations commenced in the Chennai Corporation limits on Tuesday with 7,763 enumerators starting the house listing and housing census work in all the 10 zones.
Each enumerator would have to cover 150 census houses by July 15, which roughly works out to 11,64,450 census houses.
Civic body officials explained that a census house was not just one individual residence but door numbers. For instance, apartment complexes with one door number would be counted as one census house.
Maps have been provided by the Census Directorate to the enumerators, who are local body officials, State and Central government employees and teachers, including those from aided schools, the officials said.
The enumerators would also be collecting details for the National Population Register. The NPR provides an option for the citizen to record the name in a manner he/she desires.
Director of Census Operations, Tamil Nadu, S. Gopalakrishnan requested all residents to provide details required by the enumerators for filling up the Census 2011 and NPR schedules.
Check ID cards
“Please do not permit enumerators without checking their ID cards. The acknowledgement card [issued by the enumerators] should be preserved for future use,” he said.

The Census operations in the city were launched at the Raj Bhavan, with Governor Surjit Singh Barnala being the first to be approached for collection of the information.
The housing census operations in Ambattur Municipality started from Chief Secretary K.S. Sripathi's residence in Anna Nagar Western Extension on Tuesday.
Provide accurate details
Mr. Sripathy said that people must provide accurate details to the enumerators who would visit them. The enumeration was also done in Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta's residence in the same area. He said that it would also be beneficial in issuing voter identification cards. Officials of the Ambattur Municipality said that about 550 enumerators and 91 supervisors have been deployed for the work. They would be provided a detailed maps of the streets in the area during the initial few days to carry out housing census enumeration. It would be completed in 45 days.
The Census India 2011 operations began in Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts on Tuesday with Census officials collecting details from Tiruvallur Collector T.P. Rajesh and the District Revenue Officer and Collector-in-charge, Kancheepuram, S.Sivarasu.
While a total of 6,017 field staff would be deployed in Tiruvallur district for this exercise, 7,400 staff would be engaged for the 45-day exercise of collecting details from public in Kancheepuram district, according to an official release.
