Closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras will be installed in all stations under A1, A, B and C categories in Southern Region utilising Nirbhaya Fund, General Manager Vashista Johri said on Wednesday.

Thirty-two CCTV cameras will be installed in all the four platforms covering their entire length at Erode Junction, Mr. Johri said.

Monitoring (of footage) will be carried out either at the station itself or other places where there is RPF presence.

As for security onboard trains, the helpline number 138 has ensured RPF response to passengers within half an hour, he said after inspecting amenities at Erode Junction along with Divisional Railway Manager of Salem Division Hari Shankar Verma and other senior officials.

As against Rs. 90 crore last year, the Southern Railway has been sanctioned Rs. 65 crore so far during this year. The funds will be utilised for installing escalators wherever required.

A sum of Rs. 8 crore will be spent on installing escalators in Salem Division, he said. The lifts at Erode Station will be readied by this year end, and the escalators by March 2017.

The demands of travelling public for shifting the air-conditioned waiting hall from the entrance to a location closer to platform will be considered, he said.

There was no proposal to pursue the project for Erode-Palani railway link, he said, replying to a query. The need for a fifth platform in Erode Junction has not arisen as yet, he said, responding to another question.

Waiting time of Express trains at Erode Junction will reduce substantially through Camtech Watering System. From the current 15 minutes, the waiting time will reduce by at least five minutes.
