The CBI on Monday arrested an Assistant Commissioner of Police and a Sub-Inspector in connection with the death of a labourer who was picked up for an inquiry in 1995 in the Kunnam police station limits, now in Perambalur district.
The two were summoned to the CBI office in Chennai.
While Assistant Commissioner of Police C. Kasthuri Gandhi was admitted to the Mahatma Government Hospital here after he complained of health problems, Sub-Inspector Ravi was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court here. Chief Judicial Magistrate A.P. Balachandran remanded both till June 9. Gandhi was an Inspector at the time of the death, while Ravi was a Constable.
Gandhi is now Assistant Commissioner of the Madurai City Police Control Room. Ravi is attached to the Immigration Wing at the Tiruchi airport.
In December 1994, a minor girl eloped with a person from Veppur. The girl’s father filed a habeas corpus petition and later another petition in the Madras High Court, seeking production of his daughter. On the court’s direction, the Tiruchi SP formed a team, which comprised Inspector Kasturi Gandhi and others. The team which went in search of Chelladurai picked up his elder brother Pandiyan for an inquiry. Pandian was found dead a couple of days later. His wife alleged that he died of police harassment. The case was transferred to the CBI after she approached the High Court.
