The leader of a caste-based forum in Tamil Nadu, charged with instigating his supporters to indulge in violence resulting in the death of a bus driver last month, was granted anticipatory bail by the Madras High Court Bench here on Monday after he offered to pay a compensation of Rs. 3 lakh to the family of the deceased.
Passing orders on the anticipatory bail application of Tamil Nadu Kongu Ilaignar Peravai state convenor Thaniarasu, Justice Raja Ilango directed him to appear at the Dindigul SP’s office daily at 10.30 am.
Supporters of Thaniarasu had stoned buses in several places in western Tamil Nadu protesting an alleged attack on the convoy of their leader by a group of villagers after one person was hit by his car near Vilampatti on November 12.
The Judge allowed the bail plea after Thaniyarasu offered to pay Rs. 3 lakh to the wife and daughter of the state-owned transport corporation bus driver, who had succumbed to injuries suffered in stone pelting allegedly by the peravai workers near Nilakottai on November 13.
The petitioner should handover the cheque for Rs. 3 lakh to the SP who in turn should give it to the Nilakottai Magistrate for being handed over to the deceased driver Yuvaraj’s wife and daughter, the judge ordered.
Police had registered a case against Taniarasu and some others for allegedly pelting stones at a Hosur—bound bus, leading to the death of Yuvaraj.
His bail plea was opposed by the police.
They said 27 cases were pending against Taniarasu in Tiruppur, Salem and Namakkal districts for damaging public properties. As many as 28 government buses were damaged in the violence by his followers at different places. Hence he should not be given bail, said the prosecutor.
