A team of election officials seized Rs.58.5 lakh, reportedly meant for ATMs of a bank, for want of proof here on Monday evening.

Officials said that the team led by Returning Officer Gunasekaran was conducting vehicle check at Karungalpalayam and intercepted a van proceeding to Erode town. The occupants were identified as staff members of a private firm, who were carrying the money to the ATMs.

“As the staff members were not able to produce sufficient documents, we have seized the cash and handed it over to the treasury office. The cash will be later handed over to the Income Tax Department,” Mr. Gunasekaran said.
