A case was registered against Kaveripattinam Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam union secretary K. Magendaran by the police on Saturday in connection with alleged granite smuggling and for threatening government officials.

A release issued by Collector V. Arun Roy stated that a team of officials headed by Palanivelu, Assistant Director, Mines and Minerals Department, intercepted a tipper lorry and found granite stones being transported without permission near Marichettihalli village on Friday night. When the officials were taking the lorry to Kaveripattinam police station, a group of three people came on a two-wheeler and blocked the road. Mr. Mahendran came to the spot with about 30 people in two-wheelers and autorickshaws.

Mr. Mahendran and his associates allegedly threatened the officials and took away a mobile phone of the one of them from the Mines Department. The Collector in the statement said that Mahendran and his associates threatened the officials that they would crush them under the lorry if they obstructed their vehicles. Based on a complaint submitted by P. Saravanan, Assistant Director of Mines and Minerals, Kaveripattinam police have registered a First Information Report.
