May 13, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - SALEM:

The police have registered a case against P. Thangavelu, candidate of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and 50 cadre of the DMDK-People Welfare Front alliance for picketing the buses in front of the bus stand in Jalagandapuram town on late Wednesday evening.

Complaint

The supporters of CPI(M) and other fraternal parties condemning the poll officials for not initiating any step on their complaint of distribution of money to the voters by the AIADMK and demanding the arrest of ‘Edappadi’ K. Palaniswami, Minister and party candidate, blocked the traffic in front of the bus stand. They were led by Mr. Thangavalu.

Kumareshwaran, Returning Officer of the constituency and police pacified them, following which they dispersed.

The police on Thursday registered cases under Section 143 (unlawful assembly), Section 341 (wrongful restraint) against Mr. Thangavelu and 50 others.

Mr. Thangavelu condemned the police for registering case against the CPI(M) cadre. He told reporters here that they were resorting to peaceful agitation, as the poll officials refused to take against the AIADMK activists, who indulged in the illegal activity of distributing money to the voters.

Instead of taking action against the AIADMK men, the police has registered case against those who preferred a complaint, he said.

He said that the poll officials were acting in a partisan manner in favour of the ruling party.
